Common questions

Physiotherapist Susan answers your questions

susanphysio

How do I know if I'm ready to start exercising with Stroke Class?

Consulting with your healthcare provider can give you some feedback. Whether it's your family doctor or local physio or someone you've worked with at the hospital.

How do I know Stroke Class will work for me?

We know that doing nothing is not a good option because if you're not moving, general deconditioning is going to become a part of your presentation. We know the brain has the capacity to recover through neuroplasticity and that moving can help the body recover.

Should I have someone else in the room while exercising?

For safety you should always have someone around, especially if you're just getting started. Just to make sure that you have someone there who's keeping an eye on things.

What are the benefits of using Stroke Class?

The exercises can feel good and do good things for your body. But ultimately they're helping you move to a better function through your day. So it's leading to an improved ability to go from sitting to standing. To go for a walk and move better. All those functional abilities are really the benefits of the exercise.

Safety Video & Exercise Disclaimer

Anyone participating in a stroke exercise class should first be medically stable. In that light, we encourage people to first talk to their family doctor or trusted healthcare professional prior to starting a class. Feel free to refer them to our site. While anyone can participate on their own, you may wish to have a family member or other support person with you for the first few classes.

Key Considerations:

• Wear comfortable clothing to ensure maximum movement of the exercises

• Wear good footwear with a rubber or other solid sole

• Make sure the chair is strong and in proper working order

• Position your chair on a flat surface

• Ensure there is ample room around the chair so you don’t hit anything

• For those in a wheel chair ensure the brakes are locked on. If you feel stable enough you can remove your armrests and/or footplates to allow more freedom of movement.

• The exercises should not cause pain. Only move as far as is comfortable.
